How we research a guide

The same six-step process runs behind every buying guide on the site, whether it's air fryers or wardrobe organisers.

Last updated: 10 October 2026

1. Map the category as it exists in Australia

We start with the Amazon Australia browse tree for the target category and cross-reference it against other major AU retailers. This gives us the honest set of products a shopper can actually buy, ship and warranty in Australia — not just what's popular in the US or UK.

2. Shortlist by real-world constraints

Products are shortlisted on the criteria that matter for the category: capacity, footprint, power draw, price band, spare-part availability, warranty length, and whether the model is sold by an authorised AU distributor (important for the warranty to actually be honoured).

3. Cross-check specifications against the manufacturer

Every spec we publish is verified against the manufacturer's own documentation for that exact model and version. Retailer listings drift — we don't rely on them for the technical numbers.

4. Read the buyer feedback pattern, not the star rating

A 4.5-star product with recurring complaints about a specific failure mode is worth flagging. A 4.0-star product whose negatives are all "wish it came in another colour" is not. We look for repeated themes across verified purchase reviews, and we say what we found.

5. Write the guide around a decision, not a product

Every guide answers a specific shopping decision: what to buy if you're tight on space, what to buy if you want the mid-price option, what to buy if you need it delivered before Christmas. Each product entry covers who it may suit, the trade-offs, and what we couldn't verify. Where the site has not physically tested a product, we say so plainly — you'll find a hands-on disclosure at the top of each guide.

6. Refresh on a seasonal cadence

Guides are re-verified at least every 60 days for price, stock and product-line changes. Cooling categories are refreshed in September– October, heating in March–April, and outdoor categories around June and November. Any material change is noted in the article's update history.

Pre-publish checklist

Before a guide goes live, every one of these has to pass:

  1. Exact model and version confirmed against manufacturer documentation.
  2. Current Australian stock and retailer availability checked.
  3. Amazon Australia availability confirmed for each proposed affiliate product.
  4. Affiliate URLs point at real, live product listings only.
  5. Image rights verified and product images match the exact model described.
  6. Warranty and delivery claims re-checked against retailer terms.
  7. Affiliate disclosure present and correctly positioned near product CTAs.
  8. Rendering, internal links, mobile layout and metadata verified.
  9. No unsupported testing, rating or firsthand-experience language remains.

Where our sources come from

  • Manufacturer product pages and published specifications.
  • Retailer listings (Amazon Australia, and where useful, specialist AU retailers).
  • Third-party testing bodies where they cover the AU-market model, such as CHOICE or equivalent published lab results.
  • Verified buyer reviews on retailer pages, read for patterns rather than headline scores.

What we don't do

  • Import reviews or rankings written for a US/UK/EU market.
  • Accept money in exchange for a review, ranking position or link.
  • Recycle manufacturer marketing copy as if it were independent analysis.
  • Claim hands-on testing that didn't happen.

See the editorial standards for the writing rules behind each guide, or the corrections policy for what happens when something slips through.
